چکیده

Patients and methods Eight positions were tested in each patient. The positions were classified by maneuver and ultrasound images of each position were stored. Two factors were determined at each position: “safety width” (the part of the internal jugular vein that did not overlap with the carotid artery) and “overlap width” (the part of the internal jugular vein that did overlap with the carotid artery).

Comparison of the effect of the Trendelenburg and passive leg raising positions on internal jugular vein size in critically ill patients.

Central vein catheterization is a common procedure performed on patients under intensive care. The safe and successful placement of the central venous catheter depends on vein size. Although used for this purpose, the Trendelenburg position can be hazardous in some patients. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of the Trendelenburg and passive leg raising (PLR) positions on the size...

An Ultrasound Study of Cerebral Venous Drainage after Internal Jugular Vein Catheterization

Objectives. It has been advocated that internal jugular vein (IJV) cannulation in patients at risk for intracranial hypertension could impair cerebral venous return. Aim of this study was to demonstrate that ultrasound-guided IJV cannulation in elective neurosurgical patients is safe and does not impair cerebral venous return. Methods. IJV cross-sectional diameter and flow were measured using t...

Ultrasound-guided internal jugular vein catheterization in critically ill pediatric patients

PURPOSE Continuous intravenous access is imperative in emergency situations. Ultrasound-guided internal jugular vein (IJV) catheterization was investigated in critically ill pediatric patients to assess the feasibility of the procedure. METHODS Patients admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit between February 2011 and September 2012 were enrolled in this study. All patients received a c...

Central venous catheter-related infection in a prospective and observational study of 2,595 catheters

INTRODUCTION Central venous catheterization is commonly used in critically ill patients and may cause different complications, including infection. Although there are many studies about CVC-related infection, very few have analyzed it in detail. The objective of this study was to analyze the incidence of catheter-related local infection (CRLI) and catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) ...

OBJECTIVE To determine the correlation between central venous pressure (CVP) measured by conventional central venous access and ultrasonographic measurement of internal jugular vein (IJV) height and inferior vena cava (IVC) diameter. METHODS A prospective, cross-sectional, convenience sampling observational study. RESULTS 25 patients from the Emergency Department (ED) Universiti Kebangsaan ...
